Program Description
|
The Women, Infants and Children Program (WIC), funded through
Massachusetts Department of Public Health, provides a unique health and nutrition program
serving women and children with or at risk of developing nutrition related health
problems. Designed to influence lifetime nutrition and health behaviors, WIC
provides nutrition education and counseling, distributes checks for free nutritious food
and facilitates access to health care to low-to-moderate-income pregnant women, infants
and children under five. WIC also distributes coupons for fresh produce, redeemable
at farmers' markets during the summer months. |
Program Services
The Women, Infants and Children Program provides free nutrition
information to help keep pregnant women, infants and children under five healthy and
strong by providing:
 | Counseling on how to use food to improve health. |
 | WIC checks to buy foods that help keep the family healthy and strong. |
 | Information on eating well during pregnancy, breastfeeding and postpartum recovery. |
 | Breastfeeding support. |
 | Infant feeding and care issues. |
 | Child feeding and care issues. |
 | Immunization screening and referrals. |
 | Discussion on food shopping and recipes. |
 | Information regarding referrals to doctors, health centers and clinics, dentists and
programs like Food Stamps, TAFDC, MassHealth (Medicaid), Healthy Start, Early
Intervention, Children's Medical Security Plan, Child Support Services, daycare and fuel
assistance, etc.. |

Eligibility Guidelines
To be eligible for WIC, applicants must:
 | Be pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum woman, an infant or a child under five |
 | Live in Massachusetts |
 | Have a total household income of less than 185% of the federal poverty guidelines |
 | Have a nutritional need |
