Spirit award goes to Community Action

From the Eagle-Tribune April 25, 1999

Executive Director Philip F. Laverriere Sr. will accept the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce Community Spirit Award on behalf of the Greater Lawrence Community Action Council at its annual dinner April 28.

The Community Spirit Award recognizes agencies that have made significant contributions to the well-being of the Merrimack Valley.

Joseph J. Bevilacqua, chamber president and chief executive officer of the Merrimack Valley Chamber, said the selection process began several months ago.  Mr. Laverriere was chosen after being nominated by a committee comprised of past winners and chamber members.

Mr. Bevilacqua said every year the winner has received unanimous support from the community and other chamber members, indicating that the committees have done their job well.

Mr. Laverriere has been with Greater Lawrence Community Action for 33 years.  The agency's purpose is to help those in need in a manner that enables them to help themselves.  Its mission is to serve as a ladder for the disadvantaged, low-income, elderly and handicapped so they can achieve and maintain a life that fosters dignity and self-determination.
