R.E.T.O RESPONSIBLE EDUCATORS TEACHING OTHERS RETO was a peer leadership program of the Lawrence Teen Coalition. Since 1993, RETO worked to prevent tobacco use among youth in the Greater Lawrence area. RETO achieved its goal through 3 main strategies: code enforcement, advocacy, and education. RETO advocated for policies that limit tobacco advertisement, second hand smoke exposure (smoke from another person's cigarette), and youth access to tobacco products. RETO also educated the community about the negative effects of tobacco use through health fairs, recreational and cultural events, workshop presentations, public service announcements, and street outreach. In collaboration with the region's Boards of Health, RETO performed compliance checks to ensure that local tobacco merchants were complying with the law and not selling cigarettes to minors. |
