Teen Pregnancy Prevention Through dedicated community effort, Lawrence has accomplished a significant and steady decline of 34.5% in teen birth rate since 1988, the first year the community began implementing its comprehensive teen pregnancy action plan. Yet, even with these reductions, Lawrence's birth rate stands as the highest in the state and more than three times the state rate. The teen birth rate is highly correlated with our high rate of poverty, unemployment, school dropout and low MCAS scores. |
Fighting for funding at the State House ! |
During fiscal year 2002, state funding to fight teen pregnancy was virtually eliminated. The restrictive nature of federal funding and limited local resources has made it virtually impossible to restore these programs. Although the teen birth rate has improved greatly since 1988, Lawrence is still in vital need of these programs in order to continue its decline in teen pregnancy. If you like to contribute to the Coalition to help restore these programs, please contact us by phone (978) 681-4978 or e-mail.
