Working to Guarantee a Stronger Commonwealth:  A Framework of Local Interventions of the Teen Challenge Fund Coalitions of Massachusetts was written by Dr. Claire Paradiso of the Lawrence Teen Coalition.  The report documents the successes of seventeen coalitions in Massachusetts which have worked to reduce adolescent pregnancy and are now being threatened by state budget cuts.  The report  

  • outlines the history of the coalitions,
  • describes their impact on reducing teen births,
  • provides a common framework for their action and success that is rooted in scientific research and best practices..
  • delineates how the state’s highest risk youths are served
  • highlights community, family, peer, and individual factors that place youths at risk and protect them from teenage pregnancy
  • links the healthcare access, comprehensive health education, and youth development components of our intervention framework to actual community efforts that show comprehensive and coordinated efforts of the coalitions to develop a community-wide response to teen pregnancy,
  • details the evaluation of the Coalitions and plans to improve it, and
  • discusses the devastating impact of the Fiscal Year 2002 state budget cuts on our direct services, seeking to restore funding the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s Teen Pregnancy Prevention Challenge Fund.
