Family Fun Literacy Day

Family Fun Literacy Day was held at the Lawrence Public Library on Saturday, November 5th.  Mayor Sullivan spoke to the children about the importance of learning to read, pointing out "If you read a book every day, there is nothing you can't achieve!" He read a book about Babe Ruth with great animation and Cesar Sanchez read poems from his book, Sapito Azul. He is a local teacher who is a well known children's poet in the Dominican Republic.

The Community Strings, a musical group of 4th-8th graders from the Community Day Charter School, filled the library with wonderful sounds. They were followed by a group of children who performed several traditional Cambodian dances.

Besides entertainment, there was a resource fair, refreshments and a free raffle. Every child in attendance received a free book.

The event was in response to November being proclaimed as family literacy month. The event was a collaboration between the Lawrence Public Library and Pathways to Family Success. Funding for the project was provided by Massachusetts Department of Education, Verizon Foundation and Greater Lawrence Community Action Council, Inc.
